GAFFNEY, S.C. – The 23rd-ranked UNC Pembroke wrestling team battled back from an early 16-3 deficit to pull to within a point late in the match, but Limestone got a clutch overtime victory from Matthew Rudy in the final bout of the night to turn back the Braves, 19-15, on Thursday evening in the Timkin Center.
Limestone won the first four individual matchups of the evening to build a 13-0 lead on the team scoreboard, but
Tyler Makosy battled back from a 4-1 deficit in the first period and got the Braves on the board with a 7-4 decision over Nicholas Leitten at 149 pounds.
DeAndre Johnson pushed the advantage for the Saints out to 16-3 with a 7-1 decision over
Eric Milks in the 157-pound matchup, but the Black & Gold captured the next three matches, including all-American
Blaze Shade's first-period pin of Jimmy Sandlin at 174 pounds, to pull within a lone point.
Cook and Rudy grappled in what would turn out to be an uneventful opening period of action, but Cook registered a 4-point near fall early in the second to go out in front, 4-1. Rudy grabbed a takedown to pull to within a point, but Cook countered with an escape to extend his advantage out to 5-3. Rudy, again, registered a takedown in the closing seconds of regulation, and then put the match away with a takedown in the extra frame.
The Braves will be back in action again on Saturday when they head to central South Carolina for the Newberry Open. UNCP will return home on Sunday for a tri-meet with Ferrum and ECAC foe Emmanuel at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
