Football Rolls Past Concord To Cap Homecoming Week

PEMBROKEDevin Jones got the scoring started with a 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and the UNC Pembroke football team scored touchdowns on six other possessions as well, to lift the Braves to a 48-34 win over visiting Concord on Saturday evening at Grace P. Johnson Stadium.
 
The triumph snapped a three-game losing streak for the Black & Gold (2-4) who improved to 10-2 in Homecoming outings. It was the seventh-straight loss for Concord (1-7) who fell to 3-1 all-time at Grace P. Johnson Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
Concord used key 17- and 32-yard passing plays to march into UNCP territory, but it was Luke Walls who capped the 8-play, 53-yard scoring drive with a 38-yard field goal. CU 3, UNCP 0
 
Devin Jones hauled in the ensuing kickoff at the 3-yard line and sliced through the Mountain Lions special teams for a 97-yard kickoff return. UNCP 7, CU 3
 
Concord moved 39 yards on four running plays before Kyle Akin found Brandon Plyler on a 30-yard scoring strike that gave the visitors their first lead. CU 10, UNCP 7
 
The Braves answered with a 13-play, 62-yard drive on the ensuing possession that took more than seven minutes off the clock. Josh Jones capped the drive on a misdirection pass that found its way into the hands of McKinley Nelson. UNCP 14, CU 10
2ND QUARTER
Adam Fulton completed all three of his pass attempts amid a 5-play, 68-yard scoring drive, including a 37-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Bowman midway through the second quarter. CU 17, UNCP 14
 
Joshua Dale engineered a 9-play, 64-yard scoring drive, opening the drive with a 9-yard pass to Shammond Hicks, and then capping it on a 7-yard quarterback keeper. UNCP 21, CU 17
 
Tyler Hinton and Tajai Liles forced a fumble on the ensuing possession deep in Concord territory, and Josh Jones found Quay Threatt down the far sideline on a 14-yard touchdown pass moments later to cap the first-half scoring. UNCP 28, CU 17
3RD QUARTER
Josh Jones completed all three of his pass attempts for 72 yards, and Josh Sheridan closed out a 7-play, 84-yard scoring drive with a 4-yard dive up the middle. UNCP 35, CU 17
4TH QUARTER
Quadrin Williams began a scoring drive early in the fourth quarter with a 6-yard run, and then hauled in a pass from Joshua Dale three plays later and galloped 47 yards down the far sideline. UNCP 42, CU 17
 
Isaiah Bowman ran for 42 yards on just four carries on the ensuing possession to set up Adam Fulton's 7-yard touchdown pass to Jamal Fisher. UNCP 42, CU 24
 
Kyle Akin went 5-for-6 for 64 yards, including a 14-yard scoring strike to Brandon Plyler, and then found Tywan Pearce on a 2-point conversion pass to get the Mountain Lions back in the game. UNCP 42, CU 32
 
Joshua Dale's 27-yard touchdown pass to Jalon Nixon down the far sideline put insurance points on the board for the Braves, but Concord blocked the PAT attempt and returned it 93 yards for two points of its own. UNCP 48, CU 34
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Senior Tyler Hinton matched an 11-year-old school record with 3-1/2 sacks against the Mountain Lions and nearly doubled his season total in the process.
+ Devin Jones' 97-yard kickoff return was the third-longest kickoff return in the 12-year history of the program. Jones also logged three tackles for the Black & Gold on defense.
+ Josh Jones threw for 153 yards and two touchdowns on 14-of-20 passing, while Joshua Dale threw for 83 yards and two scores on 3-of-6 passing
+ Four different receivers – Quay Threatt (4 catches, 34 yards), McKinley Nelson (2-13), Quadrin Williams (1-47) and Jalon Nixon (1-27) registered touchdown passes on the night. Eleven different receivers recorded at least one catch.
+ Josh Sheridan ran for 79 yards on 16 carries, including a 4-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
+ UNCP forced a pair of turnovers on the day, including a game-ending interception by Jordan Howard who also finished with five tackles.
+ The Braves went 9-of-13 on 3rd down conversions against the Lions, and scored touchdowns on all four trips to the red zone.
NOTABLES
+ UNCP improved to 10-2 all-time in Homecoming games with Saturday's victory, and have now tacked up a win on Homecoming in four-straight seasons. The last Homecoming loss for the Braves was a 13-6 setback to Newberry on Oct. 25, 2014.
+ The Braves are now 4-3 all-time in the series with Concord, and are now 13-6 all-time against current members of the Mountain East Conference.
+ UNCP is now 40-18 all-time at Grace P. Johnson Stadium.
UP NEXT
The Braves will close out the road portion of their 2018 schedule on October 27 when they head to Hickory to battle Lenoir-Rhyne (7-1) at Moretz Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
