MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Sophomore
Silus Kipkoech and freshman
Joshua Chepkesir finished 0.6 seconds apart and each eclipsed the previous school record in the 8K run to lead the UNC Pembroke men's cross country team to top honors at the Georgia College-hosted Bobcat Invitational on Saturday morning.
On the women's side, freshman
Skylar Moreno led the way for the Black & Gold for the fourth event this season, this time covering the 6K course in a personal-best 23:45 and pacing the Braves to an eighth-place showing among an impressive field of 19 teams.
In the men's race, Kipkoech crossed ahead of the rest of the 162-man field with a time of 24:08.4 – nearly seven seconds faster than the school record mark (24:15) established by Rio Olympian Pardon Ndhlovu during the 2012 campaign. Logan Ward was third with a personal-best time of 25:00.7.
Matthew Martin crossed in 16
th place with a time of 25:46.8, while
Jonathan Martin (season debut) rounded out the scoring for the Braves in the 41
st position with a time of 26:35.5.
Ean Ormsby covered the course in a personal-best time of 26:45.5 on the way to 49
th place, while freshman
Jarett Arabie was 79
th with a personal-best mark of 27:39.9.
Moreno crossed in 21
st place (142 in women's field), while sophomore
Molly McCann was 41
st with a time of 24:46.8.
Riley Axe (25:14.0) walked away with a 56
th-place finish,
Sam Badami was 83
rd with a time of 26:24.4 and
Shelby McMurray (88
th place) rounded out the scoring for the UNCP women with a time of 27:09.0.
The Braves will get a two-week hiatus from competition before venturing into the postseason on November 3 when they head back to Augusta, Ga., for the Peach Belt Conference Championships at Redcliffe Plantation.
