WALLACE, N.C. – Freshman
Maddy Corley carded an opening round 76 and followed that up with a second-round 75 to share first and lead the UNC Pembroke golf team to a tie for second after the first 36 holes of the UNCP-hosted Sunoco Campbell Oil Classic in Wallace.
The Braves (+49) shot rounds of 315 and 310 to share second with Carson-Newman on the par-72, 5,812-yard Landing Course at the River Landing Golf Club. No. 28 Lenoir-Rhyne (+45) used a second-round 302 to jump from fifth to first and is four shots ahead of the 11-team field. No. 11 Wingate (+53) slots fourth, but was one of three teams to card a higher score in round two than round one.
Corley (+7) is atop the individual leaderboard with Lenoir-Rhyne's Ainee O'Conner (+7), but the duo is just one shot clear of third place and two shots ahead of a trio of golfers at nine-over par. Corley leads the field in par-4 scoring (+2) and rolled in four birdies on Monday. Bare (+10) was tied for second after 18 holes and fell into solo seventh with rounds of 76 and 78, while
Savannah Thompson (+16) carded a pair 80s to share 20th with four others.
Katy Flax (+17) carded 83-78 to finish Monday in a tie for 25th and
Megan Munroe rebounded from an opening-round 83 with a second-round 79 to share 27th in the 60-player field.
The Braves entered a quartet of individual competitors into the field, led by
Amanda Levy (+17), who used an 81 and 80 to slot into a tie for 25th.
Casey Burroughs (+23) sits solo 37th after rounds of 84 and 83, while
Susannah Ireland (+30) carded 83-91 and is tied for 46th.
Meredith Godwin (+35) slots solo 52nd after shooting 92-87 on Monday.
The third and final round tees off at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday morning. The Black & Gold will tee off between 10:31 and 11:03 a.m. looking for its first team title since this event last season.
