WALLACE, N.C. – Senior
Savannah Thompson carded her lowest round of the 2017-18 season and the UNC Pembroke golf team matched its third-best score of the campaign to fuel a season-best, second-place finish at the Black & Gold-hosted Sunoco Campbell Oil Classic in Wallace.
The Braves (+65) saw all four scoring players go under 80 to compile a team total of 304 on the par-72, 5,812-yard Landing Course and the River Landing Golf Club. No. 28 Lenoir-Rhyne (+54) finished 11 shots clear of the field to win the team title, while No. 11 Wingate (+68) slotted into third behind UNCP in the 11-team field.
Thompson (+18) jumped seven spots into a tie for 13th by carding a final-round 74, which is her season-best score and six shots better than her Monday rounds. Freshman
Maddy Corley (+11) continued her string of consistency with her fifth top-20 finish of the season. She fired a third-round 76 to finish fourth in the 60-player field.
Alexandria Bare (+15) logged her first top-10 of the season, as a final-round 77 slotted her solo 10th.
Megan Munroe (+23) also shot a 77 on Tuesday and leapt seven spots into a tie for 21st, while
Katy Flax (+25) finished 27th after shooting an 80 in the final round.
The quartet of UNCP individuals was led by
Amanda Levy, who used a third-round 81 to tie for 28th, and
Casey Burroughs, who carded a 79 on Tuesday to share 32nd with two others.
Susannah Ireland finished in a tie for 46th with her second 83 of the tournament and
Meredith Godwin was among a tie for 52nd after a final-round 92.
The Braves are back in action April 1-2 at the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate hosted by Division I Appalachian State. The two-day tournament at the Mimosa Hills Golf Club in Morganton will be the final regular season action for UNCP.
