Baseball Finishes Off Sweep Of Southern Wesleyan

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke baseball team took advantage of 16 free passes on the day, including a septet of walks in the opener of Saturday's series-closing twinbill, to finish off a weekend sweep of visiting Southern Wesleyan with 8-1 and 8-4 victories over the Warriors at Sammy Cox Field.
 
Junior Christian Jayne accumulated four hits across the doubleheader to lead the Braves (6-3, 3-0 CC) who picked up their first weekend sweep of the season, and their first conference sweep since taking all three games from nationally-ranked North Georgia in April. Southern Wesleyan (3-8, 0-3) fell to 0-5 on the road this season with Saturday's losses.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
TOP 1 Spencer Faulkner drew a 5-pitch walk to juice the bases with one out, and a costly wild pitch seconds later brought the first run of the game across. Owen Taylor's laser off the foot of SWU starter Parker Pillsbury brought in another run, and Wellington Guzman absorbed a first-pitch bean ball in the next at-bat to force home the third run of the frame.
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
BOT 1 Gage Hammonds teed off on a full-count offering from SWU starter Jacob Standridge to give UNCP the early edge.
BOT 3 Ramsey Petty and Garrett Littleton both singled to lead off the frame, and Ethan Ott brought a run home two at-bats later on a sac fly to right field.

The Braves will open up a six-game road trip on Monday when they head to southern West Virginia to battle Bluefield State (4-3) in a 3 p.m. contest at Bowen Field.
