Baseball Falls To Bluefield State In Walk-Off Fashion

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. – Garrett Littleton's ninth-inning RBI single helped the UNC Pembroke baseball team stake claim to a late 3-1 advantage, but Bluefield State counted with three runs in the bottom of the ninth, including Alfredo Carrion's two-out RBI single, to push past the Braves, 4-3, on Monday evening at Bowen Field.
 
The Braves (6-4) stranded nine runners on base (six in scoring position) over the course of the ballgame, and went 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position on the afternoon. The comeback victory snapped a three-game losing streak for the Big Blues (5-6).

KEY INNINGS
TOP 9 Ramsey Petty absorbed a hit by pitch to start the frame, and pinch runner Matt Kelley moved into scoring position a short time later via costly wild pitch. Garrett Littleton provided an insurance run for the Black & Gold when he laced a 1-and-2 offering from BSC starter Zane Eggleston through the left side.
BOT 9 Jordan Varela-Payne singled to lead off the bottom of the frame, and Jarred Simpson followed with a RBI double to trim Bluefield State's deficit down to a lone a run. A sacrifice bunt seconds later moved the runner into position, and Ty Sizemore followed with a RBI single to knot the game up. Brayden Merrick put runners at the corners for the hosts on a two-out blooper to centerfield, and Alfredo Carrion finished off the comeback win one pitch later.
