Men’s Basketball Travels To Virginia State Saturday

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke men's basketball team will make the trip to Petersburg, Va., on Saturday for a non-conference contest with Virginia State. Tipoff is slated for 4 p.m. inside the VSU Multipurpose Center. 

Fans unable to make the trip to Petersburg, Va., can still follow the game for free via a live video stream on the CIAA Sports Network. Live statistics will also be made available for free courtesy of Virginia State.

Series Notes
Saturday marks the fifth time the two teams have met. UNC Pembroke leads the all-time series 3-1 and defeated Virginia State 78-62 in the last meting on Feb. 5 in Pembroke. UNCP has also won the last three meetings. 
Scouting Reports
UNC Pembroke
  • UNC Pembroke snapped a two-game skid on Wednesday with an 86-72 victory at Claflin. UNCP shot 50 percent from the field and picked up 46 points from its bench.
  • The Braves average 80.8 points per game and are shooting 47.5 percent from the field. Opponents are limited to 74.0 points per contest and are shooting 44.5 percent from the floor. 
  • The Black & Gold have tallied more rebounds against each of their opponents this season, and have posted a double-digit rebound margin in three games. UNCP averages 38.6 rebounds per game while opponents are limited to 31.3 boards per contest.
  • Jonathan Kurtas registered a career-high 21 points on Wednesday and went 9-for-12 from the floor. The redshirt senior pulled down eight rebounds, had three steals and two blocks in 24 minutes of action.
Virginia State
  • Virginia State is looking for its first win at home and lost 79-78 against Shaw on Wednesday. The Trojans had a layup blocked with two seconds left to end the game and outscored Shaw 46-24 with points in the paint. 
  • VSU is shooting 43.9 percent from the field and averages 70.4 points per game. However, opponents average 70.8 points per game and are shooting 38.9 percent from the field. 
  • The Trojans average 39.5 rebounds per game while their opponents average 38.1 boards per game. VSU has been out rebounded in four games this season.
  • Jacob Cooper has seen action in just three games this season, but is averaging 12.3 points per game. The senior scored a team-high 18 points at Shaw on Wednesday.
