CHARLESTON, W.Va.– Sophomore Marta Ortega carded a four-over-par 75 in the opening round of action to help position the UNC Pembroke golf team in fifth place at the UC Invitational at the Edgewood Country Club. 

A native of Mallorca, Spain, Ortega (+4) sits in a seven-way tie for seventh place, and is just five strokes behind Lucia Martin of Charleston, who leads the individual tournament. Catherine DeSiena (+6) among an eight-way tie for 18th place after the first round, while Ella Reed (+7) finished the first round in a five-way tie for 26th place. Melissa Guerra Landa (+9) sits in a five-way tie for 41st place, while and Maya Fitzgerald (+10) rounded out the scoring for the Braves in a three-way tie for 46th place. 

Newcomer Ella Woo (+22), who is playing as an individual, is tied for 77th place.

The Braves will close out action at the UC Invitational on Tuesday.
