RALEIGH – Sophomore Blaze Shade posted three-straight wins to begin the day in the 174-pound tournament and came away as the UNC Pembroke wrestling team's only place-winner to highlight action for the Braves on Sunday afternoon at the NCAA Division I-laden Wolfpack Open in Carmichael Gymnasium.
Shade opened up the day with three close victories against NCAA Division I opponents, before falling to NC State's Peter Renda in the semifinals. Shade had previously taken down Virginia's Tyler Askey, North Carolina's Matt Meyer and Appalachian State's Forrest Przybysz to advance.
Six wrestlers registered at least two victories for the Black & Gold in the event, including Jake Smith (133 pounds), Brian Thompson (141), Daniel Ownbey (141), Kyle Kidd (184) and Chris Giddens (heavyweight).
The Braves will return to action again on Thursday when the club suits up to battle region rival Belmont Abbey in a 7 p.m. dual meet in the English E. Jones Center. Admission to all 2013-14 UNCP home wrestling dual meets is free.
