PEMBROKE – Senior
Matt Davis became the first kicker in program history to account for 20 or more points, the offense generated more than 500 yards of total offense and Code Black engineered another solid performance on the defensive side of the ball as the UNC Pembroke football team upended Fayetteville State, 50-28, on Saturday evening at Grace P. Johnson Stadium.
It was the eighth-straight series victory for the Braves (2-0) who totaled the most offense points by one side in the Two Rivers Classic saga as well. The Broncos (0-2), who were limited to just 99 passing yards in the outing, fell to 0-4 all-time at Grace P. Johnson Stadium.
Davis kicked a program-best five field goals, including four from 30 or more yards, on the way to the most points by a kicker (20) in the 10-year history of the program. Redshirt freshman
Miles Grant carried the ball 12 times for 132 yards to pace the ground game, while all-American
B.J. Bunn hauled in five passes for 88 yards and a first-quarter touchdown – the 10th time in the last 12 games that he has found the end zone.
Code Black registered 10 tackles for loss (-36 yards) on the night and sacked Fayetteville State's quarterbacks five times.
Garrett Barnett turned in a team-best nine tackles in the outing, while
Shawn Everett totaled six tackles and an interception. Nine different Braves turned in a tackle for loss or a tackle for loss assist against the Broncos.
The Braves tacked up the first two scores in the contest, the latter of which was a 31-yard field goal by Davis that gave the hosts a 10-0 advantage midway through the first quarter. Fayetteville State, however, scored touchdowns on each of its next two drives to take the lead by the end of the opening period.
UNCP would take control after that, however, and scored points on seven of its next 10 possessions to eventually stake claim to a 50-21 lead after a 17-yard scoring scamper by
Quadrin Williams with 59 ticks remaining. The Broncos added a 51-yard touchdown pass from DeMarius Davis to Marquez Beeks with just three seconds remaining to provide the final.
The Braves will hit the road again on Saturday when they make the short trip to Raleigh to take on Shaw (0-2) at Durham County Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
