BLUFFTON, S.C. – Despite sitting in eighth place in the 18-team field, the UNC Pembroke golf team is just nine shots off the lead after the opening round of the UNCP-hosted Battle at Old South at the Old South Golf Links in Bluffton, South Carolina.
The Braves (+13) find themselves just four shots behind third-place Lee University (+9) on the par-72, 5,874-yard course, while SCAD-Savannah (+4) holds a two-shot advantage over second-place St. Leo (+6). Peach Belt Conference foe North Georgia (+10) shares fourth with West Georgia and league mate Flagler (+11) sits sixth, just two shots clear of UNCP.
The first fall action for the Black & Gold saw freshman
Maddy Corley (+2) pace the team with a two-over 74 in her first collegiate action, as the Charlotte native is in an eight-way tie for 15th place in the 95-player field. Corley birdied holes 3, 16 and 18 and carded a 37 on both the front and back nine.
Senior
Savannah Thompson (+3) carded an opening-round 75 to grab a share of 23rd, while freshman
Katy Flax (+4) and junior
Alexandria Bare (+4) are tied for 30th after first-round 76s. Senior
Amanda Levy shot 80 on Saturday and is among a five-way tie for 62nd.

Casey Burroughs (+10),
Samantha DeBusk (+13) and
Meredith Godwin (+19) are among ties for 72nd, 84th and 91st.
Sunday's final round will tee off at 8:04 a.m., as the Braves look to erase the nine-stroke deficit and win their season-opening tournament for the second-consecutive season.
