BLUFFTON, S.C. – Freshman
Maddy Corley backed up her opening-round 74 with a second-round 75 on Sunday to fuel the UNC Pembroke golf squad to an eighth-place finish at the UNCP-hosted Battle at Old South in Bluffton, South Carolina.
The Braves (+34) carded a 309 on Sunday on the par-72, 5874-yard Old South Golf Links just outside of Hilton Head. SCAD-Savannah (+6) carded 292-290 to win the team title by eight shots over St. Leo (+14) in the 18-team field.
Flagler (+28) was the lone Peach Belt Conference school to finish ahead of the Black & Gold in a tie for sixth, while league foes North Georgia (+35), Columbus State (+46) and Young Harris (+54) were slotted ninth, 12th and 14th on the final team leaderboard.
In her collegiate debut, Corley grabbed a share of 17th in the 95-player field. The freshman birdied two of the four par-3s (holes four and eight) and added her third birdie on the par-5 fifth hole. Junior
Savannah Thompson (+8) shot a 77 in the final round to finish in a tie for 31st, while
Katy Flax (+11) carded a 79 on Sunday to share 41st with eight others.
Amanda Levy (+14) and
Alexandria Bare (+16) finished in a tie for 57th and 66th with final round scores of 78 and 84, respectively. Sophomore
Casey Burroughs fired a Sunday 83 to share 75th with two others and freshman
Samantha DeBusk finished in solo 86th after carding a final-round 86.
Meredith Godwin knocked four strokes off her first-round score with an 87 on Sunday to grab a share of 91st.
St. Leo's Amanda Jakobsson (-4) shot a four-under 68 on Sunday to win the individual title by one shot over Wingate's Diana McDonald (-3), who also carded a 68 in the final round.
The Braves are back on the course October 2-3 at the Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate hosted by Lenoir-Rhyne. The 36-hole tournament will be contested on the Ocean Ridge Plantation's Lion Paw's Course.
