BEECH ISLAND, S.C. – Three runners finished among the top 6 for the UNC Pembroke men's cross country team – including a 1-2 finish by Kenyans
Joshua Chepkesir and
Silus Kipkoech – to help lead the Braves to their second Peach Belt Conference title in four seasons on Saturday morning.
Chepkesir covered the 8K course at Redcliffe Plantation in 24:22.3 on the way to becoming the second UNCP freshman in as many years to take home top honors at the conference championship. Kipkoech was 19 seconds back (24:41.4) in the runner-up position, while senior
Logan Ward was sixth with a time of 25:07.6, and
Matthew Martin crossed in 11
th place in 25:49.0. All four runners were also lauded with all-conference notoriety.
Ean Ormsby registered a personal-best time of 26:06.6 and finished in 16
th position – just 1.6 seconds away from 15
th place and a spot on the all-conference team – to round out the scoring for the Black & Gold. Freshman
Jarett Arabie was 35
th with a personal-best time of 27:02.7, while
Holden Newman crossed in 39
th place with a mark of 27:30.1 – 47 seconds better than his previous personal best in the 8K run.
On the women's side,
Skylar Moreno finished ninth with a personal-best time of 19:01.6 to pace the Braves to a sixth-place finish at the event.
Riley Axe crossed in 30
th place with a time of 19:52.5, while fellow sophomore
Molly McCann crossed in 39
th with a time of 20:14.7.
Corey Pethers was 51
st,
Shelby McMurray crossed in 61
st place and
Sam Badami rounded out the scoring for the Braves in 63
rd place.
Moreno picked up all-conference notoriety with her finish as well.
The Black & Gold will continue its road in the postseason on November 17 when they head to Gainesville, Ga., for the NCAA Southeast Region Championships.
