Logan Ward each finished among the top 5 to lead the men to a runner-up team finish, while newcomer
Skylar Moreno paced the women to a fifth-place showing, as the UNC Pembroke cross country teams resumed their 2018 regular season schedule on Saturday afternoon at the 6
th Annual UNG Cross Country Invitational.
Chepkesir covered the 8K course in a time of 25:07.60 and finished nearly 20 seconds ahead of Kipkoech (25:27.01) for medalist honors among the 95-man field. Ward was fourth with a time of 25:56.43, while
Matthew Martin settled into 13
th place with a mark of 26:47.66.
Ean Ormsby ran a personal-best time of 27:15.18 to round out the scoring for the Braves, while freshman
Jarett Arabie (28:03.97) and sophomore
Holden Newman (28:17.41) finished 41
st and 45
th, respectively.
Moreno (24:18.25) led the way for the Black & Gold on the women's side with a 13
th-place tally, while sophomore
Molly McCann finished 34
th with a time of 25:47.56.
Riley Axe (25:53.16) walked away with a 36
th place finish, while fellow sophomore
Corey Pethers covered the 6K course in 26:11.97 on the way to 43
rd place.
Sam Badami (26:37.73) was 51
st,
Michaela Reynolds (27:09.21) finished 61
st and
Brenna Sifford rounded out the field for the Braves with a time of 32:34.08.
"To run as controlled of a race as we did on the men's side and only lose by just one point says a lot, especially after having a month off from competition and two weeks away from campus due to Hurricane Florence," said head coach Peter Ormsby. "I was very pleased with how the girls were packed up throughout the race. They went through the same adversity over the last two weeks, so I was really encouraged with their result."
The Braves will return to action on October 6 when they trek to Raleigh to take part in the Great American Cross Country Festival at the WakeMed Soccer Park. The men's race is scheduled to get underway at 9:30 a.m., while the women's race will follow at 10:05 a.m.
