Men 2nd, Women 5th At North Georgia Cross Country Invitational

September 29, 2018

GAINESVILLE, Ga. – Newcomer Joshua Chepkesir, Silus Kipkoech and Logan Ward each finished among the top 5 to lead the men to a runner-up team finish, while newcomer Skylar Moreno paced the women to a fifth-place showing, as the UNC Pembroke cross country teams resumed their 2018 regular season schedule on Saturday afternoon at the 6th Annual UNG Cross Country Invitational.

Chepkesir covered the 8K course in a time of 25:07.60 and finished nearly 20 seconds ahead of Kipkoech (25:27.01) for medalist honors among the 95-man field. Ward was fourth with a time of 25:56.43, while Matthew Martin settled into 13th place with a mark of 26:47.66. Ean Ormsby ran a personal-best time of 27:15.18 to round out the scoring for the Braves, while freshman Jarett Arabie (28:03.97) and sophomore Holden Newman (28:17.41) finished 41st and 45th, respectively.

Moreno (24:18.25) led the way for the Black & Gold on the women's side with a 13th-place tally, while sophomore Molly McCann finished 34th with a time of 25:47.56. Riley Axe (25:53.16) walked away with a 36th place finish, while fellow sophomore Corey Pethers covered the 6K course in 26:11.97 on the way to 43rd place. Sam Badami (26:37.73) was 51st, Michaela Reynolds (27:09.21) finished 61st and Brenna Sifford rounded out the field for the Braves with a time of 32:34.08.

"To run as controlled of a race as we did on the men's side and only lose by just one point says a lot, especially after having a month off from competition and two weeks away from campus due to Hurricane Florence," said head coach Peter Ormsby. "I was very pleased with how the girls were packed up throughout the race. They went through the same adversity over the last two weeks, so I was really encouraged with their result."

The Braves will return to action on October 6 when they trek to Raleigh to take part in the Great American Cross Country Festival at the WakeMed Soccer Park. The men's race is scheduled to get underway at 9:30 a.m., while the women's race will follow at 10:05 a.m.
